OSTEOPOROSIS
Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis are very common in women nearing menopause age. If good intake of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D are not observed, bone health deteriorates fast after menopause. Calcium and phosphorus constitute the principal mineral components of bone. Nutritional significance of these minerals is experienced when bones become porous, soft, weak or fragile. Hormonal disturbances restrict the absorption of calcium from food. People taking steroids, suffering from diabetes and not taking nutritious diet are prone to this disease. Absorption of calcium depends largely on body needs, ingested food, vitamin D and calcium – phosphorus ratio.
On a normal diet only 30 percent calcium is absorbed. While on a low calcium diet sometimes absorption is higher. However requirement of calcium should be taken care of in crucial stage of life. When sugar intake increases, calcium absorption and utilization decrease. Sometimes food containing phytic acid and oxalate combine and form calcium oxalate. Aerated and carbonated drinks or soda have different acids, which deplete calcium – levels making bones weak. Calcium absorption is facilitated by vitamin D. One more important thing is the ration of calcium – phosphorus ratio which influences utilization positively.
Diet therapy can eliminate the deformalities due to osteoporosis. Today expectancy of life has increased and modern day stress affects the quality of life. Elevated stress hormones can lead to osteoporosis along with other problems. Osteoporosis can be treated well and effectively with vitamins and minerals. Vegetarians have plenty of choices rich in calcium. For osteoporosis nutrition therapy is aimed at supplying adequate nutrients and lowering the bone deterioration.
A properly planned diet therapy is essential for this disease. |
