SLEEP DISORDERS

Sleep disorders, insomnia or scanty sleepless nights are the gifts of our personal stresses. Sleep disorders means disturbed sleep, less hours of sleep or untimely sleep. Faulty work habits, eating, patterns, and lifestyle have played major role in this problem.

Many people take tea, coffee or cocoa at night to stay awake for working-late. These beverages keep alert but if taken at night often, hindrances natural sleep. Our body clock works according to its usual time. If it is disturbed, sleep disorder will occur.

To get good sleep we need to have soothing and calming drinks instead of stimulating or exiting ones. Glass of warm milk with sugar, milkshake or cereal with cold milk are better options than coffee, tea or colas. The theory is simple. Milk contains Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) which has a precursor – tryptophan. When milk is heated tryptophan gets activated. It gives soothing effect by converting in to serotonin. This conversion facilitates sleep. One can also try Banana, Mango, and Papaya, as bedtime snack as they contain tryptophan. Taking potatoes, barley, pearl millet, rice flakes are also good sources of tryptophan. Taking them in dinner may help. Sugar works as a tranquilizer so add it in bedtime milk or snack.
